Professor Thomas White, IBECC’s Founder, began his career working on utopian theory. Returning to where he started from, he has written a new book–Prospero’s Staff: A Utopia. Anyone interested may sample the first three chapters either to read or listen to. See prosperosstaff.com for details.
A 21st century woman awakens 2,000 years in the future with no memory. She’s told she’s either trying to stop a group of time-traveling terrorists from changing history—or she’s one of them! Encountering a society very different from her own, she must determine not only who she is and what her mission is, but—given the decisions she’ll have to make—what kind of world should be allowed to exist.
Written in the spirit of Ursula LeGuin’s The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia, Prospero’s Staff combines engaging science fiction with serious utopian speculation. The story is set in 41st century “Nauset” (Cape Cod) and “Atlantis” (a new continent), with 21st century flashbacks to Cape Cod and Los Angeles.
